Welcome to Phys-x!

This is the personal website of Ben Loftin. Here you will find my musings, rants and documentation on how I spend my free time. Phys-x is pronounced quickly and I consider the term physics antiquated. Although dictionaries may disagree.

Description of Hobbies:

My favorite hobby is robotics. It simply combines all of my favorite things (ok break into song), phys-x, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, language and computer science. All of my focus lately has been on redesigning KIT to accommodate the Mac Mini and details can be seen on the Mac Mini blog.

Recently, some time has been spent on gnuRadio and the USRP. It is a great learning platform for digital signal processing and software radio. My long term goal is to integrate it into the robot as the comm/GPS component, but there is a long way to go. For now I'll be using the Mini's wireless card and Bluetooth.

PlanetPhysics, PlanetMath and AsteroidMeta are my attempts of applying the spirit of the open source movement to knowledge. The open source movement has shown us what can be accomplished by combining free time with a world wide community. More has to be done outside the IT world and hobbyists need to band together and build on each others work.
